Inner Sanctum, originally called The Squeaky Door, made its debut over the Network on January 7, 1941. Inner Sanctum was famous for the creaking door opening as part of the introduction which entertained a generation of listeners. Radio was famous for its ability to create emotions "out of thin air." One of the emotions that radio did best was stark raving terror. Horror radio shows took the darkened night and solitary listener as a willing companion on an unknown journey of fear, terror and dread. Tales of horror recreated by great actors, a spooky organ and chilling sound effects presented by a creepy, rib-tickling host, was a strange brew indeed. It was a mystery series with a supernatural overtone. The show was hosted each week by Raymond Johnson or Paul McGrath. Many guest stars appeared on the program including Richard Widmark and Boris Karloff. The shows are genuinely spooky, with eerie sound effects.
